Gum Recession

Treatment of Gum Recession

Gum recession is caused by inflammation. This can be from the result of gum disease or over-vigorous brushing or using a hard tooth brush. Recession is more likely to occur where the gum and the bone overlying the roots is very thin.
Recession can be treated by grafting. Gum tissue is taken from below the surface of the palate and grafted over the area where recession has occurred. Sometimes it is not possible to cover all the area of exposed root but the aim is to cover the most of it and increase the thickness of the gum to prevent further recession.

Treatment of Gum Recession with Gingival Veneer

Sometimes gum recession is very extensive and it is not possibe to treat it with a surgical procedure. The alternative is a gum veneer. This is usually made of silicone but can be made of acrylic. It can be removed for cleaning but otherwise is worn all the time and does not interfere with eating or speaking.
