Sedation Options

Local Anaesthestic

Local anesthetic is generally sufficient for maintaining comfort during dental procedures. We also offer other sedation options for patients who are experiencing anxiety about their procedure. The purpose of any dental sedation method is to ensure that the patient is physically and emotionally relaxed during the procedure. The two sedation options we recommend are oral sedation and intravenous (IV) sedation.

Oral Sedation

As the name implies this sedation is taken by mouth prior to your dental appointment and is quite effective for many people.  However, because it is an oral dose it is quite difficult to predict the level of sedation you will feel. Many people will sleep through their procedure whilst others may remain aware of their surroundings yet relaxed enough to proceed. If you feel you may become anxious if you are not completely asleep, then you may opt for the next level of sedation which is IV Sedation.

Intravenous Sedation

This method involves the use of intravenous medications to achieve the exact level of sedation needed to provide comfort. If the dental procedure is a lengthy one, intravenous sedation is especially helpful, because medication can be added as needed to maintain the patient’s comfort level. With the intravenous method most patients do not remember what happened during the procedure, and will have a comfortable overall experience.
