The sinuses often are a restricting factor in the maxilla for implant placement. We have over 18 years of experience with sinus grafting with many hundreds of cases being successfully treated. Sinus grafting is carried out in either one or two stages. If there is 5mm of bone or more at the base of the sinus the implant and sinus graft is carried out at the same time. If there is less bone then the sinus graft is carried out first and then the implant placed approximately 12 months later.
The graft material of choice we use is Bio-oss. This means the procedure can be carried out with local anaesthetic in the dental chair like any other dental procedure. Bilateral or unilateral procedures are carried out at a single visit. IV sedation provided by a consultant anaesthetist is available for longer procedures or for nervous patients. Some surgeons use bone harvested from the patient’s hip for this procedure. However we have found that implants placed in Bio-oss following healing have the same success rates as implants placed in non-grafted bone. The use of the Bio-Oss means there is no need for a general aneasthetic or a hospital stay and allows for a quicker recovery after surgery.
